How Soon Will Schumer Introduce His Cannabis Bill? The Industry Is Still Waiting

In a recent update on federal cannabis reform, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says his bill is almost ready. This new bill that Schumer is working on will be introduced to his floor chamber “soon” as he puts it. This past week in the middle of a press conference Schumer spoke about how a big part of the Democratic party is in favor of ending cannabis prohibition. As well as finding support from areas some wouldn’t believe such as the “libertarian right. Schumer also mentioned that voters in conservative states such as South Dakota have passed legalization initiatives this past year.

“I am going to put this bill on the floor soon. It hasn’t been introduced yet,” the majority leader said, adding that he’s been working with Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) to draft the reform measure. “Once it is introduced, it will go on the floor.”

He continued to speak on the fact that before coming out in support of legalizing cannabis he “studied it carefully.” Even with people making claims from those who don’t want federal cannabis reform, that initiating the change in policy may increase the crime rate. In addition to substance abuse and mental illness, “none of that happened in the states that legalized.” Not long ago the senator’s home state of New York has just legalized recreational cannabis. Much of his current drive for the bill came from when Schumer initially said he would be introducing his federal cannabis legalization bill “shortly.”

Schumer, Wyden, and Booker formally started their push for cannabis reform by conducting a meeting earlier in 2021. This also included representatives from a mixture of advocacy organizations to obtain feedback on the best approach to ending cannabis prohibition.

The Next Phase For Cannabis Reform In The United States

While the language of the bill has not yet been filed as well little info has been talked about. However this bill it’s supposed to remove marijuana from the list of federally controlled substances and support social equity. Back in March Schumer addressed a topic of concern. He went on to discuss that this bill also will specifically try to limit the powers of large alcohol and tobacco companies to overtake the industry.

Rather, it will focus on small businesses, especially those owned by people from communities greatly affected by prohibition. As well as having a focus on “justice, justice, justice—as well as freedom,” he said. He also advised voters to contact their congressional representatives and tell them that “this is long overdue.”

Schumer, who also incorporated cannabis legalization as a legislative priority in a recent fundraising email to his list of supporters. In this email, he stated that the American people understand that prohibition has not been successful, and “so many lives have been wasted because marijuana has been listed as something as bad as heroin” under federal law.

Final Thoughts On Federal Cannabis Reform

Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler recently expressed that he intends to reintroduce his bill to push cannabis reform. This bill is Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement. Back in 2020 the MORE Act. cleared the chamber but did not progress in the Senate under GOP control.

Currently, the Democratic party is in control of the majority in both chambers. In addition to the White House as well. Right now there is a feeling of confidence among advocates that comprehensive reform is achievable in this Congress.

But with regards to the White House, Press Secretary Jen Psaki made a statement back in March. Psaki went on to say that President Joe Biden’s position on adult-use legalization “has not changed,”. What this means is the president is still questioning the policy. He has not spoken on whether he would sign or veto a bill to enact the policy change. Even  if it arrived on his desk.
