Some proponents of the drug policy reform movement have decided to make it the mission of their lives to persuade the entire population that legalizing marijuana is the best way to end all of the racism that exists within the arrests related to cannabis. A new study shows that legalization has no effect on the racism. African Americans are being incarcerated more than white people in states where it is legal.

In a look at the arrest rates before and after Colorado and Washington legalized recreational cannabis, scientists found that while Caucasians for cannabis have fallen tremendously in those states, African Americans still remain a huge target for going against state cannabis laws.

“I am surprised and disappointed by this,” Males said to the Washington Post. “The forces that contribute to racial disparities under prohibition are clearly still in place after legalization.”

As Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychiatry at Stanford University mentioned in his article on the topic the newest data gets rid of the “widely believed hypothesis that making marijuana illegally contributes to racial disparities in arrest rates.”

“At the same time,” he added, “racial disparities are imperfect indicators of how a policy affects members of minority groups.”

A comparative report was distributed in 2015 by the Drug Policy Alliance. It demonstrated that while arrests for marijuana ownership, development and dispersion had dropped by an amazing 95 percent after Colorado passed Amendment 64, African Americans were still twice as prone to be accused of open utilization and a great deal more inclined to be incarcerated for illicit farming and ownership of more than the one-ounce limit.

“I don’t think young black or brown people are more likely to flout marijuana law than white people,” Art Way, Colorado director for the Drug Policy Alliance, said.” Legalization is no panacea for the longtime issues that law enforcement had with the black and brown community.”
