Parents and advocates of medical marijuana in Georgia are going to debut new efforts in the next week or so to try to expand medicinal marijuana laws; their main goal is to let cultivators harvest and distribute the marijuana in the state. Georgians for Freedom in Healthcare is expected to formally announce these new efforts on Tuesday at the Capitol. The targeted audience will be the legislative session that is going to begin in early 2016. For the first time this year, Georgia has allowed certain forms on cannabis – mostly oils – in order to treat diseases “including cancer, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.” Over two hundred families are capable of receiving medicinal marijuana according to registries, which would allow them to use the oil.
The only issue with the law is that it does not speak about issues with manufacturing, acquiring, or buying. To put more light on the situation, buying marijuana – recreational or medical – is still illegal under state and federal law. It seems as if the only reason that this law was passed was to create “a way for some people to be protected from prosecution for having a limited form of the oil in their possession.” Without any help from the state, families have had to find their own resources to obtain low-dose cannabis oil. Luckily for them, some were able to find three companies that ship into Georgia.
The Georgia Commission on Medical Cannabis is studying whether or not they are going to try to push the law to go further. They are scheduled to meet next Wednesday but have not come to any sort of conclusion yet. Guidelines related to farming and production are essentially what advocates have encouraged the commission to begin working on. Unexpectedly, law enforcements are a bit hesitant, however, growers who spoke at a commission meeting in August said that “their priority in cultivating plants for the oil include safety, security measures and testing that, among the top manufacturers, is often done by independent UL-listed laboratories.”
