On Wednesday, rules board in Alaska shall start taking applications for cannabis business licenses. This is the very next thing they need to do in order to set up their legal cannabis industry. Leif Abel has been waiting for this day for a very long time. He and his partners have been woking on a building on the Kenai Peninsula for their company, Greatland Ganja. In order to apply, possible business owners need to have a facility first. This has definitely been tough in certain parts of Alaska because of both location restrictions, local community bans, or worried property owners. Abel, with the Coalition for Responsible Cannabis Legislation, stated that there is a lot of risk for potential business owners.
“I would say that your average business person would look at it and turn around and do something that was much less risky,” Abel, who also cultivates and has a building company, stated.
However, he and other people say that they care very deeply about the cannabis industry and wish to be a part of its growth. It shall be a long time before marijuana can actually be bought by those that are 21 or older; Alaska’s Marijuana Control Board will begin taking in business applications on Wednesday, which means that it will take almost a month before any applications are complete thanks to noticing requirements through state regulations.
Once an application has finally finished, the board has three months to choose whether to accept or deny it. Under a schedule written out by the board’s director, the board would consider the first growing and testing in June with the first retail and produce in around September. This board is looking for a legislative fix that shall allow it to take up national criminal history to check for those applying. Also, a Senate committee is going to talk about just that on Wednesday.
