What a lot of people don’t know is that Uruguay became the first country to legalize a cannabis trade a few years back. However, there was little known about the industry there except for the fact that it existed. As we’ve seen in all the other countries, any marijuana legislation has had debate, skepticism, and antagonists, and Uruguay has been no exception. Nevertheless, the government has given pharmacies the ability to sell cannabis at their outlets; but there is one problem. 1,200 pharmacies exist in Uruguay, but only fifty have signed up to sell the drug.

This is very different from all of the other regions, such as Canada, legalizing the drug. In Canada, retail outlets including pharmacies are trying their best to get their hands on some sort of marijuana to try to profit from the huge demand. From 2013 up until now, producers in Uruguay were given licenses to grow cannabis and individuals were given permission to grow six plants at home and more at marijuana clubs where they can share with others growing different strains. Pharmacy distribution is the next step for the government in their agenda to take cannabis profits away from the black market. The issue lies with the odd reluctance the government is getting from the pharmacies.

Many pharmacies in Uruguay are still being impacted by the bad name marijuana has had over the last several decades; pharmacies fear that by selling the drug, they are going to ruin the store’s business model. Another concern would be the lack of security if they were to have so much marijuana around. On the other hand, the government is trying very hard to expand its marijuana industry. It has been reported that they are looking to increase the sale of cannabis by allowing people to buy up to ten grams per week or forty grams per month at $1.17 USD per gram, which is cheaper than eggs are.
