For those who love using cannabis, edibles can often be one of the best and most effective ways to get high. Edibles are a solid option for recreational use as well as medicinal. Eating marijuana can often be a safer way to consume the substance for those using it for those medicinal purposes.

When making marijuana edibles, it can seem like the science behind it is far too difficult for the average person. This, however, is not the case at all. It seems as though making edibles can be extremely easy if one has the proper knowledge to guide them. There are several steps that one should always utilize before preparing and making edibles to consume.

The Nicer the Flower the Better the Edible

Now, this statement may seem like a pretty solid place to start. One would assume that higher-quality cannabis would make higher quality edibles. This, however, is not fully the case. It turns out that using lesser graded marijuana can actually still make extremely high-quality cannabis edibles.

This is because a lot of the flavor and components of the cannabis plant, are lost to cooking it. This means that it might not be the best idea to grab the most expensive flower at your local dispensary. A one to one ratio of ground cannabis to some type of fat should do the trick. This ratio however can be modified to change the strength of the edibles.

Where do I Start?

When making cannabis edibles, the most necessary ingredient is some type of fat or lipid to dissolve the active ingredients into. Prior to this however, one must decarboxylate the substance. This seems like a big word, but it really just means throwing the marijuana in a low temp oven for a longer period of time.

This will ensure that the flavor remains good while the cannabis doesn’t burn. It will also make sure that the cannabis remains high enough in THC and other psychoactive ingredients, to make the most potent edibles possible.

Once this is done, the next step is to dissolve the cannabis into the fat of your choosing. This could be anything from butter to coconut oil and everything in between. Because THC is fat-soluble, it will dissolve in pretty much any type of lipid. This is a long process as the cannabis will need at least a few hours to fully leach out the desired components.

Accuracy and the Final Product

The most important part of the process is to follow directions. Decarbing or heating the cannabis must be done at precise temperatures in order to ensure high quality and repeatability. If one sticks to a recipe this should be no issue.

Lastly, the safety of the product is the highest priority of all. This means that you should always start with the smallest piece. This will help to see how high the potency of the product is. Don’t take too much, and don’t have any plans for the next few hours. This should help to give a baseline of the product you’ve made. Once all this is done, you have successfully made your first edibles.
