There are many incredibly sick people in New York that have not been able to obtain medical cannabis, and some doctors are stating that the failures of the state Department of Health are restricting people from using a potentially life-saving drug. The state agency messed up when deciding how doctors can confirm cannabis patients, including thousands in the Lower Hudson Valley suffering from awful conditions such as epilepsy and cancer, according to an investigation by the Journal News/lohud.

Quandaries about quarrels, false analysts as well as careless dispensary openings have also arisen. One of the patients that would benefit from medical cannabis “is 5-year-old Vincent Piperato of Thiells, who has Dravet syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy.” His mother, Dr. Amy Piperato, has been waiting for the day that the medical cannabis law would be enacted, and it finally came about in 2014.

In addition, she also counts the seizures her son suffered from and noted 25 last year. Although medical marijuana program was launched in January, Piperato has not been able to find a doctor to approve of Vincent. The state Health Department is not releasing cannabis doctors’ names, and legal issues do not encourage health professionals from referrals. Piperato’s most probable course of action is to stop working with the doctors that have been with her son since birth and instead work with doctors risky enough to endorse medical marijuana.

“It’s frustrating that we can’t find a practitioner, especially while knowing that children in different states have full access to this medicine,” Piperato said. “The way (New York’s) law is written there are so many barriers to access, from the doctor certification to the number of dispensaries.”

At the same time, New York has allowed for just 1,000 marijuana patients to be certified out of a list of over 200,000.
