Marijuana-Stocks-Cannabis-DEA

Everyone is curious as to what the Drug Enforcement Administration is going to do when it comes down to marijuana. Although people are not sure whether not the DEA is going to reschedule marijuana soon, they just made a move that might be able to give some insight into their mindset. During 2017, licensed cultivators are expected to make 472,000 grams of cannabis to meet the “estimated medical, scientific, research and industrial needs of the United States,” according to DEA Administrator Chuck Rosenberg in a notice that was published on Friday. That equates to approximately 1,041 pounds of marijuana.

However, that number is still less than the 658,000 grams, or about 1,451 pounds, of cannabis the DEA assigned for the year. The decline might be seen as a sign that the DEA is not going to reschedule marijuana despite all the requests they have received . Scientists, as well as proponents, have been claiming that the current position as a Schedule I drug has been very limiting when it comes to trying to figure out how medical marijuana can affect someone’s health. Douglas Throckmorton from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that cannabis’s Schedule I status means that there are “extra steps” that scientists looking to research it have to go through and that reclassification would simply increase the chances for research.

As other sources reported in 2015, the DEA has already received a recommendation from the FDA about whether or not they should move cannabis from its status as a Schedule I drug, although nobody knows what the recommendation was exactly. DEA’s rescheduling decision might come at any time. In a letter to United States senators a few months ago, the DEA stated that it wanted to “release its determination in the first half of 2016.” Although this is what they wanted, July 1st passed long ago, and there has been no announcement of a decision.
