corona pot stocks

COVID-19 or coronavirus has been a major bummer for most stocks with marijuana stocks included in them. In only a few months, we watched a large number of cannabis stocks lose out big time. And while we may be used to losses in the cannabis industry, usually they happen at a much slower rate than this. But, new research is coming out showing that cannabis may be a viable treatment for some of the symptoms of the coronavirus. If this were to be true, it would mean a major boost for pot stocks and the cannabis industry at large.

New studies have come out showing that cannabis may help to block the virus from entering the body, but these studies are small and at this point inconclusive. The basic premise is that coronavirus is transmitted through the lungs. When someone inhales the droplets of coronavirus, they quickly attach to the lungs by binding to a receptor known as ACE2. The new studies are showing that marijuana may actually help to slow or stop these receptors from taking in the coronavirus.

What the Study Shows About Cannabis

The study conducted by Lethbridge, shows that cannabis sativa, when injected into artificial human skin, can reduce those receptors from taking in the coronavirus by almost 70%. This is a major breakthrough, but there is still a lack of conclusive and large studies on the subject. The study states that “The extracts of our most successful and novel high CBD C. sativa lines, pending further investigation, may become a useful and safe addition to the treatment of COVID-19 as an adjunct therapy. They can be used to develop easy-to-use preventative treatments in the form of mouthwash and throat gargle products for both clinical and at-home use.”

The study has yet to be reviewed by a large body of peers which could be the reason why it has not yet received critical appeal. But, the results do look promising enough to continue researching. As stated before, this could be a major benefit to the cannabis industry if these results are positive in the long run.

What This Means for the Cannabis Industry

The cannabis industry could really use a boost at this time. As stated before, the results of this study have yet to come to a conclusion as to whether or not cannabis is a viable candidate to treat coronavirus. But, if marijuana could even help or pose a chance of helping those with coronavirus, it could be big news. The company GW Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:GWPH) is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies working with cannabis compounds. With this study, it seems as though GW could soon be interested in seeing whether or not this treatment works.

GWPH stock

With the backing of large funding from GW, we could begin to see more and more conclusive results about the likelihood of using cannabis to treat coronavirus. For now however, it seems as though this is just the beginning. With promising results like these, the only thing left is the funding and the time to actually get this research to show anything that is conclusive. But, this remains a great possibility for the future of the cannabis industry.
