Vermont became a bit more likely to legalize cannabis on Monday when the Vermont Senate Committee on Appropriations passed a measure to end cannabis prohibition and start a marijuana market for adult use. The legislation is now waiting to receive a full Senate vote, and it is likely that this bill will pass. The bill, S. 241, shall make it legal for those 21 or older in Vermont to have up to an ounce of marijuana and will make a market for dispensaries and cultivation sites to participate in, even if farming at home will not be allowed. It has become evident that the War on Drugs has been an absolute failure, especially when state attorneys decide to give up. Bill Sorrell wrote a letter to the General Assembly, urging its members to do what is right.

“Instead of subsidizing gangs and cartels with a failed prohibition policy, we believe Vermont should focus on reducing the harms associated with marijuana and other drug use through prevention, education, treatment, and smart enforcement strategies,” Sorrell wrote. “We strongly believe that these goals can best be achieved through regulation, not prohibition.”

In 2015, Sorrell hinted that prohibition in Vermont was likely going to end.

“Let me put it this way, I will be surprised if marijuana is not legalized in this next legislative session,” he added.

The majority of people have definitely indicated that they would like to legalize marijuana. Almost fifty-five percent of those in Vermont would like to legalize while only thirty-two percent oppose the issue, the Castleton Polling Institute, reported by Vermont Public Radio, indicates.

“As those who teach compassion and love, we believe the harm associated with marijuana can best be minimized by a regulated system that emphasizes education, prevention, and treatment rather than punishment,” a member of the church wrote.
