The new year brings in something new and exciting for the residents of California; the commencement of adult-use legal marijuana sales. Some medical marijuana retail outlets that close on December 31 will open the next day as adult-use dispensaries. But, this will not happen at every dispensary throughout the state and not all at the same time. As of December 21, a total of 15 temporary adult-use licenses have been granted to businesses spread throughout the sunshine state.

A Santa Cruz business has secured what seems to be the very first license to sell recreational marijuana in the state, Kind Peoples at 140 Dubois Street is the place when their doors open at 7a.m.. In close proximity to Santa Cruz is Del Ray Oaks and Monterey Bay Alternative Medicine, which has a valid permit as of January 1, according to the state.

In San Jose, Buddy’s has secured the lowest license number. Acquiring the lowest of all the numbers was “a life’s dream come true,” owner Matt Lucero said in an interview. Buddy’s is stocking up on prerolls as well as $280 ounces of top-shelf to mark the occasion. Adult-use sales permits have been granted to Airfield Supply and the Purple Lotus Patient Center, according to the state’s licensing authority.

Both Oakland and Berkeley will have one dispensary opening its doors on New Year’s Day. The state’s oldest operating medical marijuana dispensary, Berkeley Patients Group, will be open for adult-use business at 6 a.m. Purple Heart in Oakland is also planning to open their doors at 6 a.m.

San Diego is the largest city in the state to take recreational marijuana seriously, with at least five dispensaries planned to open on January 1, according to the state. The dispensaries are Mankind Cooperative, THCSD, A Green Alternative, Urbn Leaf, and Torrey Holistics.

Travelers willing to go further afield or those locals who happen to sleep near Mount Shasta in far-northern California, the foggy Humboldt County coast or Desert Hot Springs in the vast sandy expanse between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, will be able to score legal weed on January 1.

If your New Years’ plans involve skiing or camping near Mount Shasta, the Humboldt County coast or Desert Hot springs you will be able to score some legal marijuana as well at 530 Cannabis in Shasta Lake, Ecological Cannabis Organization in Eureka and Green Pearl Organics in Desert Hot Springs.
