After three top Massachusetts authorities — the senator, attorney general, and mayor of Boston—penned a commentary contending against weed legalization in March, industry affiliations rushed to stick to this same pattern, discharging words communicating their resistance to the ticket activity voters will choose in November.
The Massachusetts Medical Association, Massachusetts Hospital Association, Massachusetts Superintendents Association of School Superintendents and Associated Industries of Massachusetts have all bounced on the counter weed trend, reusing the same prohibitionist language exposed over and over. Groups’ announcements voicing their hatred towards the legalization activity are substantial on worries around wellbeing and kids. However, their talk is light on proof.
One of the biggest issues it the medical argument. Two of the largest hospital and medical associations in the state are tossing their weight around legalization by using a public health argument. Earlier in the month of April, President & CEO of Massachusetts Hospital Association, Lynn Nicholas, spoke of the health of the state when it comes to legalization.
“Massachusetts hospitals have always been at the forefront of promoting public health,” she stated. “Based on the clear evidence and concern for our patients and our communities, the hospital answer to whether recreational marijuana use should be legalized in Massachusetts is a resounding ‘no.’”
The Massachusetts Medical Association has opposed the cannabis industry for almost two decades and still continues to have the same opinion.
“The Medical Society believes that the overall negative health consequences of marijuana use outweigh arguments supporting legalization, and has concern regarding the strain that legalization could place on the health care system,” the MMS said to the Massachusetts legislature.
And at the same time, McDonald’s is hurting the health care system more than cannabis could. The health risks related to the drug are not life-threatening. In fact, they are extremely small when you compare them to the risks of tobacco, alcohol, and even fast food.
