Marijuana-Stocks-Untitled-2-11

For years now, elections have been an opportunity for states such as California to completely legalize marijuana. Much of the arguments have come from cannabis consumers to get rid of their criminality. Of course, though, there is always a type of justification (“the proposal will only benefit rich investors, the home growing setup is inadequate,” etc.). However, despite this, there is one thing that is sure: marijuana is going through legalization.

Legalization is defined by Wikipedia as “the process of removing a legal prohibition against something which is currently not legal,” and by Merriam-Webster as “to make legal; especially: to give legal validity or sanction to.” This is something that cannot be argued, that legalization is what it is. Some argue things like “there’s no amount of beer I can possess that is illegal! This legalization only legalizes an ounce! Therefore, two ounces is illegal and thus, this isn’t legalization!” However, this does not apply in the same way that marijuana might.

Some may argue that there is not enough marijuana being legalized when referring to a number of ounces one may have, but it is still legalization. Legalizing even just an ounce of pot changes the relationship that a marijuana consumer will have with authorities by becoming more of a citizen than a delinquent. For instance, cops’ K-9s will not be able to sniff you out with the intent of arrest unless it is obvious that you have more than an ounce of marijuana.

Perhaps the legalization of marijuana has not been the best process when setting up commercial markets. One may complain that this is not truly legalization, but they must realize that just because there is regulation on the product does not mean that it is not legal. One may complain that the legalization process is flawed, but they cannot argue that it is not legalization. Freedom, on the other hand, is a different story. Freedom would mean no limits and maybe one day we may see such a thing, but as of right now, we just have to deal with the flawed legalization system.
