This article is going to address one pressing issue in the cannabis industry; why personal farming must be allowed under any regulatory framework for legalized marijuana. However, to truly understand why personal farming rights are crucial, from the perspective of the public, one needs to understand how far illegal drug sells in the United States go. More specifically, one needs to understand how far cannabis sales go.

In a legal cannabis market, any prohibition placed on personal farming works as a price support system for licensed cannabis sales. Inflated prices for legal cannabis make a black market for the sale of illegal marijuana. Since the aim of the public policy that legalized cannabis is to stop the illegal drug trading and eventually stop it as a whole, a restriction on home growth does the opposite.

There are many people who believe that this is just a theoretical statement and one that usually loses its way in the fantastical world of policymakers and legislatures who claim that legal cannabis must be restricted so that they could make scarcity. This would be a condition that they wrongly think will stop both the entrance of cannabis to the illegal market and at the same time, raise prices that will stop people from buying. Anyone with half a brain can tell you that both are false. If cannabis prices are too high, then people are simply going to grow their own marijuana, and in turn, buy from outside dealers.

When those who makes the laws talk about the black market, do they truly have ideas as to what they are talking about. Nobody ever talks about stats about how large illegal drug markets are, about how many citizens there are selling cannabis, or how many people get incarcerated for drug or cannabis sales. But then again, there is not too much data on this topic, though, but that does not make for room to make things up.
