As much as medical marijuana has grown in society, there are still a vast amount of people who disagree with cannabis as a medical practice especially involving something as taboo as medicating children with marijuana.
Last month Shona Banda, a marijuana oil activist, had her world come crashing down when her son was taken from her custody by the State of Kansas. This whole situation came about when her 11 year old son started defending his stand point on medical marijuana following certain claims stated when his school conducted a drug education class.
“My son says different things like my ‘Mom calls it cannabis and not marijuana’. He let them know how educated he was on the facts,” stated Banda. Banda had great success when using cannabis oil to treat Crohn’s disease.
Moments after Shona Banda’s son spoke in defense of the use of medical marijuana, law officials apprehended him and conducted a raid on Mrs.Banda’s home.
“Well, they had that drug education class at school that was just conducted by the counselors… They pulled my son out of school at about 1:40 in the afternoon and interrogated him. Police showed up at my house at 3… I let them know that they weren’t allowed in my home without a warrant… I didn’t believe you could get a warrant off of something a child says in school.” Banda went on to say, “We waited from 3 o’clock until 6 o’clock. They got a warrant at 6 o’clock at night and executed a warrant into my home. My husband and I are separated, and neither parent was contacted by authorities before [our son] was taken and questioned.”
While searching for contraband, officers found 2 ounces of marijuana oil in her home. Shona Banda is concerned that the state of Kansas will make efforts to take her son away today as a custody hearing will take place.
With situations like Shona Banda’s, we can only hope people adapt more to the way of using marijuana for medical practices safely and efficiently for both adults and children.
