In a shocking move that advocates deemed a historic win, the Texas House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee approved legislation this past Wednesday that would make it legal to purchase cannabis in Texas.
The bill became victorious by the support of 2 Republicans with the panel’s three Democrats giving the House Bill 2165 a decisive 5-2 vote.
The proposition, which would make Texas 5 state In the U.S. where recreational marijuana is allowed, has very little chance to overcome any obstacles while on course to becoming law in this year’s legislative session.
Though advocates gave details in regard to the committee vote as a major step in the right direction towards future progression.
“Marijuana policy reform continues to make unprecedented progress this session,” Phillip Martin of the liberal group Progress Texas stated over social media shortly ate the vote.
This change came a few days after the same panel voted with a result of 4-2 in favor of a bill to decriminalize cannabis, engraving this as the first time a proposal like this has made it out of a Texas legislative committee.
House Bill 2165, although more of a dramatic transition, was much more successful Wednesday, gaining support from Republicans Todd Hunter of Corpus Christi and David Simpson of Longview. Committee chairman Abel Herrero, D-Robstown, vice chairman Joe Moody, D-El who as well voted in support.
Herrero stated he had some concerns with the bill, however, could possibly support it in the hopes it could be amended.
