Painkiller addiction, abuse and overdose has become an epidemic in the United States. According to the CDC, this is disturbing trend, is most prevalent among women. 2013, data shows that 18 women in the US die each day from prescription pain medication overdose. Just as many end up in the emergency room due to abuse and misuse of those same medications. Men are also deeply affected by these often dangerous drugs. Since 1999, death from pain medication overdose has increased 400% among women and 265% in men.
Pain medication is 100% legal when prescribed by a physician. Many links have been drawn between the increase in pain medication prescriptions written today and the windfall profits of large pharmaceutical companies. Is it possible that “Big Pharma”, cares more about profits than people? Some would say, “yes”.
Could thousands of lives be saved and pain managed in a safer, cleaner, and more cost effective way? According to the data coming in from the first 13 states to legalize medical marijuana, the answer is, “absolutely”. These states have studied the correlation between legal medical marijuana and pain medication abuse. What they have found is, when medical marijuana is an option for people in pain the rate of prescription drug overdose decline by 25%. That statistic, when expanded to a national level, suggests legal medical marijuana could potentially save over 4,000 lives each year!
So then, why are large pharmaceutical companies not pushing pot instead of pills?
