The New York State Department of Health announced the five organizations who won licenses to sell the medical marijuana. The organizations are allowed to open up to four dispensaries and they are required to be open for business within six months.
The winners are…
- Bloomfield Industries: Bloomfield plans to cultivate marijuana in Queens and dispense it in Manhattan, Nassau County and two upstate counties.
- Columbia Care NY: Columbia Care will grow and operate a dispensary in Monroe County, Manhattan, Suffolk County, Clinton County, and on the Canadian border.
- Empire State Health Solutions: Empire State plans to cultivate marijuana in Fulton County and have dispensaries in Albany County and Queens, as well as two other locations.
- Etain: Etain will cultivate marijuana in Warren County and dispense it in two upstate and two Hudson Valley counties.
- PharmaCann: PharmaCann plans to cultivate marijuana in Orange County and operate a dispensary in the Bronx, and three upstate counties.
Major milestone for New York State
New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker released the following statement after the winners were announced:
“Today’s announcement represents a major milestone in the implementation of New York State’s Medical Marijuana Program. The five organizations selected for registration today showed, through a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation process, they are best suited to produce and provide quality medical marijuana to eligible New Yorkers in need, and to comply with New York’s strict program requirements.”
A very restricted program
The Health Department’s regulations have been criticized by a number of marijuana advocates as being too restrictive. New York’s medical marijuana program will allow state-certified doctors to prescribe medical marijuana to patients suffering from cancer, epilepsy and other serious diseases and conditions.
The patients who actually qualify for medical marijuana will face restrictions such as medical marijuana cannot be smoked. Registered patients will be allowed to consume medical marijuana through pills, oils and vaporizers.
