Ian Frizell, age 55, was diagnosed with Parkinson’ disease in 2011. He has suffered from symptoms since 1995, which continually got worse over time. Ian has filmed a video to display what a significant difference a small amount of medical marijuana makes to his tremors. In the clip, he states that he recently underwent deep brain stimulation surgery, a medical implant that helps hide the effects of Parkinson’s. He switches the DBS device off to show the seriousness of his tremors.

“What you are seeing here is my Parkinson’s tremor with absolutely no medication whatsoever. I cannot tolerate the prescription medication for Parkinson’s disease. They make me feel extremely unwell.” Ian then says he is going to self-medicate with marijuana, and return after about 20 minutes to show viewers the difference. When he returns, he is almost completely controlled. His tremor has become undetectable.

“It’s now 20 minutes since I self-medicated with approximately 30mg of marijuana, which is just a small pinch, taken using a vaporiser,” Ian stated. “And you can see that my tremor has calmed down significantly. In fact, it’s almost completely under control.” He holds his almost-still hands up to the camera, and said, “The sense of relief is overwhelming.”

A report calling for medical marijuana to be legalized has been backed by a cross-party group of peers and medical professionals, including Paul Flynn, shadow leader of the House of Commons. Baroness Meacher, the group’s chairman, called the refusal to acknowledge the medical value of marijuana ‘irrational’. She said, “The findings of our inquiry and review of evidence from across the world are clear,’ she said. ‘Cannabis works as a medicine for a number of medical conditions.”

The report was composed by neurologist Prof Mike Barnes, who disputed that the drug could help relieve the effects of nausea and vomiting and chronic pain, specifically for those going through chemotherapy. A recent survey found that more than half of medical professionals think medical marijuana should be legalized.
