Twenty-five children in Idaho currently have to live through sundry seizures, but they will soon be able to have an experimental medical marijuana that experts believe will be of great benefit to them. An April executive order from Government Butch Otter will allow for restricted use of the medical marijuana. Otter approve this order after vetoing a lesser limited legislation that would have allowed for marijuana extract to be used in children with severe seizure disorders. The Idaho program lets 25 children to use the cannabidiol or CBD oil.
However, estimates of the children who would need the drug for their conditions equate to as high as 1,500; experts say they cannot come up with an exact number, however, because there are no records of all children suffering from epilepsy on hand. The only children in Idaho who are edible are those who have received medicine and still have four or more seizures a month. Claire Carey has a 10-year-old daughter named Alexis who has been suffering from seizures since she was two months old; according to Carey, the process is “frustrating.”
“They’re helping 25 children at most. It just made me lose all hope. The only way we are going to get access in Idaho is with a federal bill,” Carey said to The Spokesman-Review.
Idaho’s disapproval against any marijuana puts the state alone when comparing it to the surrounding states. Even Utah and Wyoming have recently legalized CBD to help treat children who suffer from severe epilepsy. Parents who pleaded for the medicine at hearings sadly described what it felt like to see their own suffering from seizures that even the strongest of drugs with awful side-effects could not halt. After hearing that many kids found relief for these seizures through CBD oil, many hope that it becomes much more widespread for their children.
