The Pa House Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee voted for the industrial hemp faming bill on Tuesday. On top of that, they voted on this unanimously. Representative Russ Diamond, a Republican from Hershey, sponsors the bill in hopes that hemp will make a comeback after it has been banned for centuries. Hemp is derived from the same plant as marijuana which is why is has been taken out of use since the end of the second World War.
“The feds are catching on to the enormous environmental and economic benefits of the use of industrial hemp, and this pilot program anticipates the full legalization of hemp crops for industrial purposes in the future,” stated Diamond. “My bill will put Pennsylvania in position to reap the economic rewards that will come when further barriers are removed.”
Currently, hemp used in the United States is imported from Canada, Europe, and soon, even China. China has been making movements to key in on the hemp industry over the last few years. A report from the Congressional Research Service states that the U.S. market for hemp products was at $580 million earlier this year. Usually, hemp is used to make rope due to its versatility. Some other uses include durable cable wires, cloth, and even seeds. Hemp seeds are popular because of their high impact on health. They are deemed as valuable food sources and may be roasted, added in with other foods, or eaten as they are. No matter how you do, it remains a valuable source of nutrition.
There are many other uses for hemp. For instance, Canada is currently making a vehicle called the Kestrel from hemp. The part of the vehicle made from hemp include the body, and all else besides the engine. Other Canadian companies are considering making things such as musical instruments from hemp to increase durability. Germany is another country profiting from hemp by planting thousands of acres annually. The United States remains the only industrial nation on the planet that does not farm hemp.
