Delaware governor Jack Markell has given his signature to an amendment that was signed into law a bill decriminalizing possession and private use of minimal amounts of cannabis. The transition follows the lead of close to 20 states that have eased penalties for personal use.
People in Delaware will be permitted to have up to 28 grams pot in their personal possession and use it privately without facing criminal charges. Law enforcement can still confiscate the marijuana, according to Delaware Online, the News Journal.
The statute will as well lower the penalty for using cannabis in a public area to a $100 civil fine. Under previous Delaware law, minimal cannabis possession was a misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and a maximum fine of $1,150.
The law will be put into action in 6 months Markell, a Democrat, signed his name on the measure almost instantly after the state senate, voting along party lines, gave final legislative approval.
In reference to the Journal, the Democratic- backed bill cleared the state legislature without one Republican vote in either the hues or senate.
