Marijuana-Stocks-Cannabis-DEA

Different from those who came before him, Drug Enforcement Administration Chief Chuck Rosenberg suggested that voters should have an honest debate about the legalization of marijuana.

“I don’t recommend it, but there is other stuff in our society that is dangerous that is perfectly legal,” Rosenberg stated at a press briefing.

Rosenberg took over as DEA Chief in May, and since then, he has reported to the Washington Post that he has given a ton of consideration to the thought of legalizing marijuana. However, he made sure to note that people should not confuse the legalization of medical marijuana with the issue of legalizing recreational marijuana. According to Rosenberg, the public debate mixes the two issues, which in his eyes, are extremely different.

“There are pieces of marijuana—extracts or constituents or component parts—that have great promise” for medicinal use, Rosenberg told to CBS News. “But if you talk about smoking the leaf of marijuana, which is what people are talking about when they talk about medicinal marijuana, it has never been shown to be safe or effective as a medicine.”

Rosenberg’s statements mix with the release of the DEA’s 2015 National Drug Threat Assessment Summary, which suggest that the usage of all illegal drugs besides cocaine and that heroin in the most dangerous drug there is. The report also noted that over 120 people die daily from drug overdoses, but zero of those overdoses are from marijuana. Rosenberg’s positions on marijuana is not one that legalization advocates wish to hear, but it is much better than those that have come before him who used misleading information.
