President Obama is in support of the measure that over 70% of D.C. voters passed last month to legalize recreational pot in Washington D.C.
But…he is also grudgingly in support of and would sign a government funding bill which as of this week- includes a rider the would block the legalization measure in D.C., according to Josh Earnest a White House spokesman. The last minute provision which would overrule the recently voter approved initiative, was snuck into the $1.1 trillion dollar spending bill by members of Congress.
“We do not believe that Congress should spend a lot of time interfering with the ability of the citizens of the District of Columbia to make decisions related to how they should govern their community,” Earnest said.
Despite that statement, the president has said he will sign the bill if it makes it to his desk in the oval office.
Some leaders in the district have called the rider anti-democratic, citing the fact that residents in D.C. don’t have voting representation in Congress.
Those members of Congress who are supportive of the rider, are adamant that they are just acting to uphold federal law, which still lists marijuana as a Schedule 1 substance.
