While the CARERS Act—which was supported by both parties and is focused on national cannabis reform—has been left to wait in political limbo for more than a year, one congressional watchman is evidently more intrigued by defaming the idea of weed legalization instead of giving this bill a reasonable chance on Capitol Hill.

Managing the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control, Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley has arrangements to lead a debate under the title, “Is the Department of Justice Adequately Protecting the Public from the Impact of State Recreational Marijuana Legalization,” apparently in a final desperate attempt to bring the country over into consistency with the government’s prohibition standard.

“These hearings are a one-sided sham with the deck stacked with witnesses who have a track record of vehemently opposing marijuana legalization,” deputy director at the Drug Policy Alliance’s Office of National Affairs, Michael Collins, stated. “An honest evaluation of marijuana legalization would include the undeniable benefits of legalization like the massive drop in marijuana arrests, the billions in taxes and the transition from an underground market to a regulated one. A more even-handed hearing would also address the destructive harms of marijuana prohibition.”

The Marijuana Policy Project additionally stood up on Monday against Grassley’s hearing, particularly considering that the administrator has spent the previous year keeping the Senate from considering the bill which would patch up any issues existing between state laws and federal cannabis laws.

“It’s shocking that Senator Grassley would choose to direct the Senate’s time, energy, and resources toward a dubious anti-marijuana hearing instead of giving the CARERS Act the hearing it deserves,” director of federal policies at the Marijuana Policy Project, Robert Capecchi added. “The CARERS Act is bipartisan legislation that has broad public support. His decision is tone deaf, to say the least.”
