It would not be a surprise to see voters in California vote to legalize recreational marijuana in 2016, so San Francisco has decided to put together a task force to begin crafting regulations for the industry. The task force is touching upon all issues, from drug potency to business locations. There are 14 seats on the Cannabis State Legalization Task Force, but 48 have applied, consisting of cancer patients, HIV patients, business owners, and even medical dispensary owners. The body will serve as advisors to the Board of Supervisors on how to regulate the marijuana industry effectively.
Last Thursday, following five hours of choosing, the Rules Committee decided the eleven people who will serve on the task force; the other three seats will be chosen on another day. The full board is expected to be decided next week, and the first meeting is expected to be held in January 2016. SPARC is one of California’s largest dispensaries. It’s leader, Erich Pearson is a member of the force and has stated that the biggest problem that they have to face is how to decide on the land use for marijuana businesses.
“We need to determine how many cannabis users we are going to have in San Francisco and how many stores that’s going to take to distribute that cannabis once it’s legal,” Pearson stated.
A list of complaints from locals has already surfaced for when marijuana dispensaries begin to open up under current city laws. The rules that exist at the moment only allow marijuana businesses to have a small part of San Francisco, which is an area called the “green zone,” which would result in a cluster. At the moment, there are 28 dispensaries.
