Microscopic insects and mildew can ruin a marijuana operation faster than wildfire. And with the marijuana plant being against the law for so long, neither cultivators or scientist have any concrete research to assist them in the battle against the infestation.
As legal cannabis makes the transition from the basement and backwoods to actual grow sites and facilities, the mold and spider mites that at one time destroyed a few plants at a time can currently create a multi-million dollar issue for pot farmers. Some are making the transition to industrial strength chemicals, increasing the worry about the safety and wellbeing of growers and users.
Pesticides and herbicides are regulated by the federal government, which still views marijuana as an illegal plant, so there is no roadmap to help marijuana growers. Chemists and horticulturalists cannot provide much help either. They at times do not agree on how to deal with the issue, mostly due to the fact that the marijuana plant has so many different uses, eaten, smoked, and sometimes rubbed on the skin.
“We have an industry that’s been illegal for so many years that there’s no research. They’re no guidelines. There’s nothing,” stated Frank Conrad, lab director for Colorado Green Lab.
In states that monitor cannabis officials are just starting to create rules governing safe regiments of chemicals. Currently, there have been no documents of any human sickness traced back to chemicals used in cultivating the process of marijuana, however, the concern is still growing.
