The Harris Poll has spent the last 5 decades taking representative analysis of American’s opinions.  With such a substantial history, they have become an authority in factual representation of America’s sentiment.  Of recent polling, the Harris Poll shows staggering evidence that the legalization of Marijuana is in fact supported by a majority of our country at this point.  The degree in which people believe this should occur does differ dramatically in regards to medicinal use and recreational use, as expected, but this is quite an insignificant matter in the big picture.

The insight offered by the Harris Poll delves deep into the questions of viewpoints of American’s in virtually all facets of the debates surrounding Medical Cannabis

  • 82% of adult Americans are in favor of Medical Cannabis. This is astounding to say the least.  A free country, one that is supposed to be governed by its people show the vast majority, in a different wording, oppose the law against Medical Cannabis, yet we still have Federal laws refusing to change.
  • Approximately half of American’s believe in recreational legalization.
  • Recreational Legalization has seen a 7% increase in support
  • 26 states allow some form of medicinal legalization for Marijuana
  • Both political parties show a majority in favor of medical Marijuana (MMJ) legalization
  • Viewpoints towards Marijuana in comparison to Alcohol seem to lead towards an indifference as to which is worse, or that Marijuana is less harmful.  Virtually no response showed a support of alcohol being safer or better in comparison.
  • More people believe the legalization of MMJ would decrease crime rates overall, this was only a few percentage points above people believing crime would increase, but right in the middle of the two were people believing there would be no change in crime rates as a result of changes in regards to MMJ.  I personally believe this shows a lack of substantial evidence even in opinion just instead a picture of how unsure our people are in their own stance of right and wrong

We all see the changes appearing each day in the headlines.  We hear conversations in the workplace or at the local coffee shop in regards to MMJ.  Opinions differ still but not near the extent they did a decade ago or even a year ago.  The sentient depicted by the Harris Poll gives us a bit of clarity on a very turbulent subject.  It seems safe to say the question is no longer whether Marijuana should be allow for medical use, but in fact we have blown by that at this point, straight to the question of recreational use.  This will take some time to change as first we rightfully should know the affects produced by marijuana in all of its many forms.  This is a snapshot of where our country stands, the winds have blown the clouds of smoke away in  a different direction then yesterday, today seems cloudy but clear tomorrow the sky’s will be.  The people are who decide what is okay or not, the government can only hold out for so long, American’s are ready for the change, for legal MMJ.
