Medicinal cannabis use has been on the rise ever since the advent of the coronavirus. With only a few months of this pandemic behind us, the cannabis industry and leading marijuana stocks are all working to offer what they can for patients during this time. New studies have shown that there may be some potential with using cannabis to increase how resistant our body is to the coronavirus.

Of course, this would be a major breakthrough for pot stocks and the whole of the cannabis industry, but little is known still about both the coronavirus and marijuana. The studies are only touching the surface on using cannabis as a potential therapeutic for the coronavirus. The studies are showing that cannabis could help to reduce the virus’ “ability to enter the lungs, where it takes hold, reproduces and spreads.”
What Is Research Saying About Cannabis Use
The researchers who have been working on this issue have been trying everything from nicotine to pharmaceuticals to see what could work to treat or prevent coronavirus. Those scientists have stated in a non-peer reviewed essay that cannabis could interrupt the receptor that coronavirus needs to reproduce. The specific receptor, known as ACE2, is paramount to the coronavirus taking hold in the body. Because of this, if they could block that receptor using cannabis, there could be some potential here. The one thing that is still being figured out is what type of cannabis could be used in this case.
Some have stated that CBD might be worth trying on its own. As well others are trying high THC versions of cannabis. The majority of the research being done on this includes the sativa type of cannabis. One of the scientists in the study stated that “our varieties are high in CBD, or balanced CBD/THC, because you can give a higher dose and people will not be impaired due to the psychoactive properties of THC.” This is in no way stating that cannabis is a viable cure or preventive measure for the coronavirus. but simply that scientists are working to find out more information.
Cannabis Industry: The Issue With Funding
One of the major issues with both marijuana stocks and the cannabis industry has been the access to funding. With this particular study, it seems as though scientists cannot get the proper funding to continue their work. This has been a very large complaint amongst the whole of the cannabis industry for quite some time now.
But, as politics change the hopes are that the cannabis industry could get some funding for research. The same scientist stated that “there is enormous interest now. The tide is coming.” With scientists looking hopeful toward the future, it looks like we could see more research within the cannabis industry. For now, however, all we can do is sit on the edge of our seats and wait.
