Florida Marijuana

The Florida Health Department made an order to stop selling a “whole flower” marijuana product that can be smoked in vaporizers, stating that it is illegal. Quincy-based Trulieve started selling “Entourage,” a whole flower product meant to be used in the Volcano vaporizer, last week.

The Health Department sent a letter to Trulieve after the News Service of Florida reported that the flower of the marijuana plant can be easily smoked in pipes, bongs, or joints, which are violations of the current medical marijuana laws.

“Licensed dispensing organizations have a responsibility to ensure their product is not one that can easily be transitioned into a smokable form. Therefore, whole flower products are not permitted,” says Christian Bax, the director of state Office of Compassionate Use.

Florida law does not permit medical marijuana smoking except using vaporizers. Trulieve’s products are in “small, wire mesh bags” in vaporizer cups. The caps can be easily removed.

The company was “surprised by the letter” but is “ immediately and completely complying with the department’s wishes while evaluating our options.” They believed that the product was legal and they had been selling the product for almost a year.

“We feel very strongly that having products available that allow patients to have a choice and to benefit from the entourage effect, also available to physicians to make recommendations to patients, is critical. So if that means we’re pushing the envelope, we’ve had a form of whole-flower vaporizer available from the day we’ve opened. This has always been part of our product line and will continue to be in the future,” says Kim Rivers, the company’s CEO.

Law makers were not able to reach an agreement on a constitutional amendment for medical marijuana regarding patients with debilitating diseases., but they all agreed on one thing: Smokable products should not be permitted.

The sale of smokable marijuana surprised the key legislators in Florida. Orlando trial lawyer John Morgan pledged to sue the state on the smoking marijuana issue, which was approved by over 71 percent of voters in November.

Advocates and patients say that the whole flower is stronger than processed products like oils or vape.

However, the state Department of Health disagrees. “The state’s marijuana operators are allowed to seek permission to sell ‘ground cannabis plant material’ meant to be vaped,” said Bad last Monday, “however, as conveyed to Trulieve in a June 28, 2016 meeting on this matter, dispensing organizations may not dispense easily breached products containing whole flower.”

He also criticized Trulieve for promoting the vaporizer but not selling it. Although it is available, the purchase of delivery products not from a dispensing organization is illegal.

“The department reminds Trulieve that all sales, possession, and use of cannabis outside of the provision” of Florida laws “are a potential criminal act,” says Bax.

Prescription drug prices are still increasing, forcing consumers into more of a struggle. Some older Americans seem to be looking for a different medicine that has been more easily obtainable and legal throughout the country. Research put out on Wednesday showed that some states that legalized medical cannabis, which is common for symptoms such as anxiety or depression, saw a drop in the amount of Medicare prescriptions for drugs used to treat similar conditions as well as a decrease int he amount of spending by Medicare Part D, which covers costs for prescription drugs.

Since the prescriptions for drugs such as opioid painkillers as well as antidepressants dropped in states where cannabis can be legally obtained and used as a replacement, the researchers stated that it seems likely legalization led to a decrease in prescriptions. This is especially noted because prescriptions did not drop for medicines where marijuana can not replace the drug. The study, which was published in Health Affairs, looked at data from Medicare Part D from 2010 to 2013. This is the first study to look at whether or not legalization can impact a doctor’s clinical practice and how it affects health costs.

The results are interesting in terms of the debate as more officials are showing interest in medical cannabis. This year, Ohio, as well as Pennsylvania, passed laws allowing the drug for therapeutic reasons, making it legal in twenty-five states as well as Washington D.C. Ballots in November could increase this number; Florida and Missouri are of the states voting on the issue this autumn. A federal agency is thinking about reclassifying medical cannabis under national drug policy in order to make it more readily available. Medical marijuana saved Medicare approximately $165 million in 2013, the researchers stated. They projected that, if medical cannabis were available throughout the country, Medicare Part D spending would have dropped in the same year by nearly $470 million. That is almost fifty percent of the program’s total spending.

There are many people who undervalue the importance of sleep. However, despite that, sleep is becoming increasingly recognized as vital to public health. There are various studies that have reported a lack of sleep leading to motor vehicle crashes, industrial accidents, and medical or other occupational errors. According to the Center for Disease Control, there are between fifty and seventy million people over the age of nineteen who suffer from a sleep disorder. The number is just as large amount teenagers; a reported 43.7% of teenagers unintentionally fell asleep at least once in the last month.

“[Having insomnia] is like desperately wanting to fall asleep but never being able to,” Kate Quinn, an eighteen-year-old who suffers from insomnia, said to Marijuana Stocks when asked about insomnia. “It’s never being able to fall asleep or stay asleep and as a result, I get sick more often and have more migraines.”

This is obviously a huge issue, and there are many people against the idea of using sleeping pills for various reasons. Often, parents of children with sleeping disorders assume that their children are merely trying to stay up late and do not treat the problem as they should. As a result, teenagers and adults alike begin to try their own methods, most of which involve marijuana.

Thanks to the fact that there are different types of marijuana, the potential to help is much better. For instance, indica strains often result in heavier sleepy effects while other strains can make you more energetic. In addition, results have indicated that aged marijuana can make you even sleepier and can make you fall asleep faster. That is why marijuana has been prescribed for PTSD or other conditions that result in a lack of sleep. Well, if that is the case, then why not legalize medical marijuana for insomnia?

Based on the past, we’ve seen that officials are very strict when deciding what conditions to legalize medical marijuana for. There are many people fighting for many different conditions to be added to the list of conditions states have set up to be approved for medical marijuana. However, Congress is not moving because they fear giving too many people access to the drug when they may not necessarily need it. That can all change soon, though. It is evident that the general opinion of marijuana has become more positive over time, and if the DEA reschedules marijuana, more research will be conducted on the drug. Hopefully, in time, insomniacs such as Quinn will be able to be prescribed medical marijuana instead of having to take pills with various side effects.

We live by converting the energy in foods, made up of carbohydrates, lipids, various proteins, enzymes, and other vital nutrients, into energy that can be used by the body.  These nutrients must either be produced by the body itself or consumed in the food we eat or supplements we take. Our body is remarkably adaptive to be able to not only survive but to thrive off a variety of food sources. Simply look to the variety of foods in the local market or the variety of cuisine around the world and you will see the multitude of ways people get the nutrition and energy that they need to live.

Our ability to adapt is due in part to the fact that our cells evolve to become  tissues, organs and physiological systems involved in energy metabolism and digestion. One only needs to think about the complexity of all these organs and systems to realize how important it is to have good communication between different cell types in response to changes in the environment.

The ability of cells to communicate is a result of the endocannabinoids, which are fatty-acid amides that are produced in response to changes in the environment. These highly specialized cells, which regulate energy metabolism in the body, have special energy requirements. Closely modulating the utilization of energy by these specialized cells is critical for promoting healthy energy metabolism. Without control, these cells can produce too many by-products of metabolism, harming the system. This happens thanks to metabolic feedback loops that correct for a buildup of metabolic by-products by shifting our metabolism from gluconeogenesis, the generation of glucose from glycogen stores, to ketogenesis, the breakdown of fats to form ketones.

Glycolysis is the primary mechanism our body uses to convert energy from carbohydrates, or sugars, into ATP which is the energy currency used by all our cells. Screen Shot 2016-03-28 at 12.47.17 PM
Fatty acid metabolism is, a much slower process, requires oxygen, and produces more by-products of metabolism compared to glycolysis. Optimal production of energy, known as cellular metabolism, requires a balance between carbohydrate and fat metabolism. This is where natural cannabinoids play an important role. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) has evolved to help modulate the regulation of cellular metabolism and subsequent energy production through the two primary cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2.

The CB1 receptor is primarily involved in regulating glycolysis, sugar metabolism, while the CB2 receptor is mostly involved with controlling fat metabolism. The ECS creates a system of checks and balances that exist between the processes responsible for metabolizing sugars and those involved in metabolizing fats.

Our metabolism affects more than just our weight, it also affects our overall health and vitality. By using products like Randy’s Remedy, Powered by Cannaka, people are able to better support a healthy metabolism using natural cannabinoids and improve energy metabolism. Cannabinoid receptors are active at the outside as well as within the cells where they control the rate of cellular respiration in the mitochondria, known as the cell’s power plant. By modulating the ECS with natural cannabinoids you can affect the rate at which cells consume oxygen and the rate at which mitochondria produce energy.

Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always to maintain homeostasis, the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment. Cannabinoids  stimulate our bodies’ ability to self-heal and help our improve the quality of life. All this suggests that our metabolism and even the rate at which we age is at some level controlled by the ECS and can be modulated with the use of natural cannabinoids.
