How Have Marijuana Stocks Performed Post Trump?

Here we are, the official inauguration day of our 45th President of the United States of America, Donald Trump. A lot has been said about him over the last few years during the election race but what many may not have expected was a clear “Trump Bump” for marijuana stocks.

As we’ve said in the past, a lot of marijuana stocks are event driven. Going all the way back to 2014 and during the years to follow, catalysts in the cannabis market can be tied to actual events in many cases. For this most recent jump in marijuana stock prices, we see that an election year and a not so conservative President may be the event to thank for this.

In this article we’ll briefly explore some of the most active and most bullish marijuana stocks in the market to give a clear example of “where we’ve been” and what we might be able to look forward to as to “where we’re going”.

OWC Pharmaceutical Research Corp. (OWCP) 3,512%

This company has been building steam since October and just recently went into overdrive to all time highs. Through its subsidiary, One World Cannabis, the Israeli-based company develops cannabinoid-based therapies that target different medical conditions. This was another cannabis biotech company that saw the impact of Trump coming into office instead of Clinton (who was very bearish on biotech).

In late October just before the elections, OWCP saw its first noticeable move from under $0.03 and initially ran to highs of $0.215. Following the consolidation period heading into the end of the year (as most marijuana stocks saw), January opened the door for this stock to run as high as $0.95

Rocky Mountain High Brands (RMHB)
271%

We’ve reported on this company and followed it for a few years. Even before when it was “Totally Hemp Crazy (THCZ)” this stock saw one of the biggest breakouts that we’ve every witnessed. It went from sub penny to highs of 0.32 within weeks. Now it appears that chart has demonstrated a similar Trump Bump that many of the other marijuana stocks have also seen.

In early October, volume began to build, RMHB ran from $0.031 to highs of $0.07. After consolidating back to 0.03-0.04, RMHB has now seen its 2017 rally trigger and has now managed to run past $0.11. Rocky Mountain is a consumer goods company specializing in brand development of health conscious, hemp-infused food and beverage products. The Company currently markets a lineup of four naturally flavored hemp-infused beverages (Citrus Energy, Black Tea, Mango Energy and Lemonade) and a low-calorie Coconut Lime Energy drink. Rocky Mountain High Brands also offers hemp-infused 2oz. Mango Energy Shots and Mixed Berry Energy Shots, as well as a Relaxation Brownie.

Marijuana Stock

Ubiquitech Software Corp. (UBQU)
304%

UBQU follows a similar trend where even though it hasn’t broken above its year end highs, the stock has seen a reversal that started at the beginning of 2017. A lot of questions were raised regarding a previously announced name change and recently the company gave clear guidance on this for 2017 that has brought attention back to the stock from market bulls. Its final name change will be Endo BioSciences Inc., and HempLife Today™ will continue to be the main subsidiary of the company.

HempLifeToday™ focuses on the exciting and dynamic new thinking in the world today that recognizes the important health and life enriching enhancement that CBD Oil from the Hemp plant can bring. Through its network of quality USA growers HempLifeToday.com™ has developed multiple and proprietary CannazALL™ CBD oil products that include; its popular CBD Tinctures, Oils, GelCaps, CBD Powder, Skin Salve, Wax Crumble, and e-liquid.

marijuana stocks

mCig, Inc. (MCIG)
1,265%

A company that we’ve kept up with for the better part of the last year, MCIG became another clear example of what marijuana stocks have started to look like after Donald Trump was elected President. The company has been making many key strides over the last few months including posting some of its best numbers in history.

This includes MCIG currently holding over $10 million in order/contract backlog (as of their last PR in December). In similar fashion to OWCP, shares of MCIG saw a bump in late October when the stock moved from under $0.04 to as high as $0.218. After consolidating in early December, MCIG manage to rally strong heading into the end of the year and recently hit highs of $0.505.

cannabis stocks

Axim Biotechnologies, Inc. (AXIM)
3,941%

Another company that we’ve been following very closely, this has been one of the biggest runners of the year amid heavy volatility. Another cannabis biotech, the company focuses on the research, development and production of cannabis-based pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmetic products. Our flagship products include CanChew®, a CBD-based controlled release chewing gum, and MedChew Rx, a combination CBD/THC gum that is undergoing clinical trials for the treatment of pain and spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis. MJNA is also an investor in AXIM.

In late October the stock was trading just under $0.50 moved to a high of $10 before consolidating to levels between $7.50-$8. Wouldn’t you know it, heading into the beginning of 2017 the stock broke the sideways trend and moved to highs of $19.80.

cannabis stock

Vitality Biopharma (VBIO)
361%

A company that many of us are familiar with, this cannabis biotech had a smaller run a few weeks before we started picking up coverage. In early October, the stock moved up from around $0.92 to highs of $1.84. After pulling back to lows in December, we began looking at this company at $0.98 and watched as it ran to highs of $4.24. The company is a cannabis biotech focusing on treating disease through its prodrug utilizing cannabinoids for the treatment of serious neurological and inflammatory disorders.

marijuana

Cannabis Science (CBIS)
469%

The company specializes in the development of cannabinoid-based medications and recently announced a collaborative research agreement with Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center. Their initial focus is on skin cancers, HIV/AIDS, and neurological conditions. The Company is proceeding with the research and development of its proprietary drugs as a part of this initial focus: CS-S/BCC-1, CS-TATI-1, and CS-NEURO-1, respectively.

From October 3 to October 19 CBIS jumped from $0.0169 to as high as $0.077. After pulling in during December, the stock kicked off the new year with a big bull run all the way to highs of $0.0961 for the year so far.

cannabis

Hemp Inc. (HEMP)
103%

One of the most vocal companies on Hemp production in the US, Hemp Inc. They’ve continued to push for a ubiquitous acceptance for all uses of the hemp plant for years now and have targeted North Carolina to grow over 3,000 acres of hemp.

“We are proud to collaborate with other American industrial hemp farmers as we now become part of the modern industrial hemp farming movement. This is a turning point for America and it’s a turning point for Hemp, Inc. Hemp, Inc. has the infrastructure in place to process millions of pounds of hemp fibers and stalks a year, on a commercial level. Our 70,000 square foot industrial hemp processing facility, on over 9 acres in Spring Hope, North Carolina, is the only one of this magnitude in North America. The industrial hemp crop is part of history in the making and it is something that will prove to be lucrative not only for the farmers in North Carolina but for Hemp, Inc. as well,” said CEO Bruce Perlowin in a recent PR.

HEMP saw a bump in volume early in October, the stock ran from $0.0276 to $0.056 before consolidating in late November/December, and has once again begun to aggressively climb back from that price channel.

hemp

Cannabis Sativa, Inc. (CBDS)
195%

With multiple subsidiaries, this company has products ranging from hemp oils & capsules to cannabidiol infused bottled water and even its own patented cannabis plan named Ecuadorian Sativa (Patent PP27,475). Back in late September the stock was trading around $2.80 per share before it jumped up to highs of $8.25. After consolidating for weeks leading up to the new year, CBDS has once again followed suit of many marijuana stocks having now climbed back above $8.

CBD

OH CANADA!

This leads us to our “neighbors up north” because we haven’t just seen a boom from US marijuana stocks alone. The trend has echoed into Canada with some of the most anticipated IPOs so far this year

Emblem Corp. (TSXVENTURE:EMC)(OTCQB:EMMBF)
55%

Emblem Corp, a Licensed Cultivator out of Paris Ontario is one of the most watched and anticipated offerings that has come out of Canada in the last few months. Beyond the fact that they are already growing cannabis and revenue producing investors have taken note of one of their founders and current President, a gentleman by the name of John Stewart.

No, not John Stewart from the Daily Show even though that would be awesome, John Stewart former CEO of Purdue Pharma one of the largest private biotech companies in the world and creators of OxyContin. We see the potential long term to create a cultivator/Biotech hybrid in which case Emblem could be the Next GW Pharma of Canada.

Marijuana IPO

InMed Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OTCQB: IMLFF) (CNSX: IN)
326%

This company has been following the same pattern as many of the other cannabis biotechs but also comes with what looks to be a stock promotion behind it. The company recently appointed Jeff Charpentier, CPA, CA as InMed’s Chief Financial Officer & Corporate Secretary as well as Martin Bott to its Board of Directors; Bott has worked at Eli Lilly & Company since 1988 and held a variety of roles in the U.S., Switzerland, Germany, and the UK.

InMed is a pre-clinical stage biopharmaceutical company that specializes in developing novel therapies through the research and development into the extensive pharmacology of cannabinoids coupled with innovative drug delivery systems. IMLFF saw a rise in price early in October (shocker right?), a period of consolidation leading up to the new year, and since that ball dropped, the stock has been on the run moving from $0.10 in October to highs of $0.4261 just a few days ago.

Marijuana Stocks

Aurora Cannabis Inc. (TSXV: ACB) (OTCQB: ACBFF)
179%

The company’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Aurora Cannabis Enterprises Inc., is a licensed producer of medical cannabis pursuant to Health Canada’s Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) and operates a 55,200 square foot, expandable, state-of-the-art production facility in Mountain View County, Alberta, Canada.

They just announced that the company has officially surpassed 12,000 registered patients within the first 12 months of product sales in Canada. They also announced that they had signed a Joint Venture Research Agreement with Radient Technologies Inc. (“RTI”). The first phase of this venture will include screening experiments of extraction conditions, while phase two includes larger scale experiments related to extraction throughput and optimal extraction conditions. Aurora’s scientists and the RTI team will commence tests January 16, 2017, and the first phase is expected to be completed within approximately six weeks, so something to keep an eye on here in our opinion.

Likewise with the other stocks, the market activity has followed suit even though Aurora has differed by not breaking a new high this year as compared to the high it made in November. But the new uptrend on the chart could be a key indicator for future potential. Since October (at $1.06), shares of ACBFF has seen two and possibly three clear runs; One that saw highs of $1.89 before consolidating, another that saw highs of $2.96 before consolidating, and possibly a new uptrend forming now in January.

Buy marijuana stocks

These are just a few marijuana stocks that have demonstrated a near identical move in the market both leading into the election and leading up to the inauguration. We’ve said it before and most likely will say it again: Marijuana Stocks can very much be event driven so something to keep in the back of your head as we watch 2017 unfold. As investors become more informed on the industry itself, we’ll keep our had on the pulse to find the real story behind some of the biggest marijuana stock moves in the market today.

Last month, on October 3, 2016, we published an article titled Past, Present, & Future of Canadian Marijuana Stocks where we expressed our bullish sentiment on the Canadian marijuana sector and identified a list of stocks to consider. In the article, we named 6 companies to focus on. Within one month of publishing the article, those 6 stocks have seen combined 480% in total gains as of November 2nd, 2016. This article would have been out a week ago if our new intern knew how to hit the publish button correctly. Regardless, the gains and the charts do not lie as they tell the tale of the ticker tape.
The Canadian government is planning to legalize cannabis in spring 2017 and the number of Canadian medical marijuana patients is expected to more than double. This will tilt the supply and demand scale for medical marijuana largely in favor of demand. We do not believe this recent rally to be just a pre-election “hype rally.” This is the coming out party for an industry with an immensely bright future and staying power.
Licensed medical cannabis producers have raised more than $100 million in the past couple months to be used to support growth initiatives like mergers and acquisitions and facility expansions to better meet the increased demand. The investment opportunities in the legal cannabis industry have proven extremely lucrative to informed investors. Let’s take a look at the 6 companies we highlighted in our October 3rd article to see how they are doing today and where they could go from here.
1. Canopy Growth Corporation (CGC.TO)(TWMJF)

pic1

Canopy Growth is the largest legal medical marijuana producer in Canada and has been one of the most attractive investment opportunities in the cannabis sector since going public in 2014. CGC.TO hit a high of $7.35 on October 20th for an 80.5% gain from our initial article publication. The stock closed trading today at $6.55, still up 61%. TWMJF (the US OTC listing) still sits up 58% today.

Canopy Growth is the medical marijuana industry leader. Aside from individual news announcements, expect other marijuana companies to follow the strength and/or weakness of CGC.TO. After a healthy pull-in, the stock held support around $5.50 and remains in a strong uptrend.

2. Aurora Cannabis (ACB.CN)(ACBFF)

pic2

Aurora Cannabis is one of the fastest growing licensed medical cannabis producers in Canada. One thing to know about them is that they recently did a private placement for $20,000,000 and ended up being over-subscribed by a few million dollars. They have one of the industry’s more impressive facilities and is partly why we added Aurora to our Focus List in June 2016. Since July of 2016, ACBFF is up roughly 125%. And since our article publication on October 3rd, ACBFF gained as much as 78% and closed trading today around $1.66, still up nearly 57%.

ACBFF is forming a bullish pennant pattern that would trigger a long through the $1.77 area or a sell below the $1.50 area. A breakdown of the pattern could see ACBFF test the gap it put in place on October 5th. However, a healthy consolidation in this range would give the moving averages time to catch up while the stock takes a breather before a possible move higher into $2.00 land.

3. Aphria Inc. (APH.V)(APHQF)

pic3

Aphria showed the smallest gain potential of all the companies listed in our October 3rd article. A max 17% gain was possible while APH closed trading today at $3.80, still up 10%.

APH.V has put in a double top at $4.00 that would act as a trigger long if broken to the upside. Support is in place around $3.30 after being tested multiple times and holding over the past month. A break below this support could see Aphria test its next support area around $3.00.

4. OrganiGram Holdings (OGI.V)(OGRMF)

pic4

Organigram is the second largest licensed producer in Canada and was the first to report positive cash flow. Organigram could be considered the second industry leader behind Canopy Growth so it is no surprise to see the two share very similar chart patterns. OGI.V hit a high of $3.11 on October 19th for a 75% gain from our article publication and closed trading today at $2.76, still up 55%.

Like CGC.TO, Organigram remains in an uptrend. Support was put in around the $2.30 area after a healthy pull-in. Look for OGI.V and CGC.TO to show strength and weakness together. It would be rare for one to show strength while the other weakness (unless for an individual press release good or bad).

5. Arcturus Growthstar Technologies (AGS.CN)(AGSTF)

pic5

Arcturus Growthstar Technologies is a company that may play a huge part in the expansion of the Canadian cannabis market and its ability to meet the increased demand. Their Controlled Environment Agriculture technology helps producers minimize land, water, and energy output while increasing crop turnover and capacity.

We also published a Connect the Dots piece on AGSTF on October 4th to introduce our readers to a new company that we believed was worth considering. The stock gained a remarkable 180% in just three days before pulling back in to still be up 34%. For those unfamiliar with Arcturus, we recommend going back and reading our Connect the Dots piece published on October 4th.

It’s important to discuss why such a sharp pullback after the 180% run. And we believe there to be a couple reasons.

➢ The stock is a very new issue and, therefore, does not have as much of a trading history as some of the other companies on this list. The trading float is also much smaller than the Canadian companies that came public in 2014 or sooner. This can sometimes result in over exaggerated or over extended price movements in both directions because of lack of stock available in the open market.

➢ The Company had a million dollars of warrants exercise at $0.15 to raise additional capital to support their rapid growth and expansion. Although it brought cash to the company, it added pressure to the market that aided in the sharp pull-in. But with that exercise now behind them, Arcturus can focus on putting that money to work.

Don’t forget, in October 2015, one year ago, Organigram traded for less than $0.30 a share, too. Fast forward to October 2016 and the stock now trades for $2.75 a share. Good management can build shareholder value pretty quickly when appropriating funds correctly and progressing through their business plan. And the management team behind Arcturus is one of the main reasons why we decided to issue a Connect the Dots piece on the company.

6. Cronos Group (formerly PharmaCan Capital Corp.) (MJN.V)(PRMCF)

pic6

Cronos Group is an investment firm and holding company for Licensed Producers under Canada’s Marihuana for Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (“ACMPR”). With interests in five licensed producers and three license applicants, Cronos Group is focused on building iconic brands providing patients with compassionate, personalized care. The stock hit a high of $1.35 on October 6th for a 45% gain from our article publication and currently still sits up 29%.

Similar to Aurora Cannabis, Cronos has developed a bullish pennant pattern. The $1.30 area would be a trigger long while the $1.13 area a trigger sell. A breakout could see MJN.V run to the $1.60 area while a breakdown would most likely retest the $1.00 mark, maybe lower.
Conclusion

The timing of our article titled Past, Present, & Future of Canadian Marijuana Stocks was spot on. We nailed breakout points in most of the major Canadian cannabis companies. After publication, the 6 stocks highlighted gained a combined total of 480% and each one remains higher today.

As we mentioned in the article, we believe the Canadian market to be much further along in development than the US market; although the US market is making major strides that we will discuss in a future article. The overall marijuana industry is experiencing a strong rally, both in the US and Canada. And we believe the companies discussed in this piece to have long-term investment potential, not just a quick trade.

Earnings season is starting to heat up and so far it has been unimpressive at best. Companies continue to cite weakness as a result of weaker global demand and a stronger dollar, and we expect this to be a theme of this earnings season. The combination of weak earnings, slowing demand, and poor economic data, will create a great opportunity for an investor to buy quality companies at a discount…but you need to know where to look. The markets are trading lower this morning after China registered its steepest monthly drop in its exports since February, with a 10% year-on-year contraction compared with expectations for a 3.3% decline. Although we expect this trend to continue, we want to highlight stocks that we are monitoring for a buy opportunity on further weakness.

MassRoots (MSRT)

MassRoots is one of the largest and most active technology platforms for cannabis consumers, businesses and activists. The social network formed in April 2013 as an online community for people who smoke cannabis.

We are favorable on MSRT and see upside to current levels because of the following reasons: 1) It continues to advance its platform and create new avenues for revenue growth, 2) It has entered into strategic partnerships that has improved and differentiated its product when compared to its competition, 3) The election will serve as a catalyst as it will increase the number of active users on its platform, 4) The company’s cost cutting initiatives have strengthened its balance sheet and improved its financial position, 5) It started monetizing its platform and revenue has grown significantly since it started, and 6) Its valuation has improved.

GW Pharmaceuticals (GWPH)

GW Pharmaceuticals continues to be our top pick in the cannabis sector and we are favorable on the company for the following reasons: 1) It continues to receive positive Wall Street coverage, 2) Its deep pipeline of products will create catalysts for years to come, 3) It possesses valuable intellectual property that makes it a very expensive acquisition target, and 4) The shares are trading below the average Wall Street price target.

We continue to believe that GW will be one of the greatest beneficiaries from the legalization of medical cannabis and the shares are a perfect vehicle for anyone who wants to enter the legal medical cannabis sector but is still hesitant to do so.

Aurora Cannabis (ACB) (ACBFF)

Throughout 2016, we have continued to recommend Aurora Cannabis (ACB) (ACBFF) as the Street continued to undervalue the company’s stock. Aurora’s Canadian symbol, ACB, and its United States symbol, ACBFF, have rallied more than 200% since late August and we continue to hold onto the shares in our mock portfolio.

We remain favorable on Aurora at current levels for the following reasons: 1) It continues to strengthen its management team and board, 2) It is bringing on new patients at industry leading rates, 3) It is building a 600,000 sq. ft. facility that will have an estimated annual production capacity of over 70,000 kg of cannabis, 4) Its financial position continues to improve, 5) The company recently commenced trading on the TSX Venture Exchange and we expect to see them up-list to the TSX in 2017, and 5) We expect the company to report that it is cash-flow positive before the end of the year.

                          CANN Update:
General Cannabis Corporation (CANN)

announced that it was made aware of and requested by the OTC Markets Group to comment on recent trading and promotional activity.

  • The OTC Markets reached out to General Cannabis and told the company that it had received copies of promotional newsletter emails encouraging investors to purchase shares of common stock. This promotional activity coincided with higher than average trading volume and the company said it was unaware of the promotional activity until they were informed by OTC Markets. The company said it is unaware of the full nature and content of this promotional activity, the responsible parties and the extent of the email newsletters’ dissemination.
  • General Cannabis Corporation said it has not, other than disclosed in its Form 8-K filed with the SEC on September 26th, disclosed the offering pursuant to which CANN issued an aggregate of 4,500,000 Series A Warrants exercisable at $0.35 per share and 4,500,000 Series B Warrants exercisable at $0.70 per share, none of which have been exercised.
  • On October 12th, CEO Robert Frichtel filed a Form 144 indicating his intent to sell 100,000 shares in accordance with Rule 144.  On the same day, CEO Frichtel sold 25,000 shares of common stock in in the $3.64 to $4 range.

The timing of the insider sales and promotional activity are very coincidental and this raises some red flags in the eyes of investors, the market, and regulators. Although this could just be a coincidence, it does not look good especially for a company that was previously suspended by the SEC. We have no skin in the game, we hold no positions, but are watching closely after a 40% drop yesterday and we expect to see further weakness going forward, despite today’s bounce. We will keep you updated on any significant developments and we are of the opinion that taking profit anytime a company makes over 100% gains in a brief time segment is always smart. Remember, no one ever went broke taking profit.
