This year, New Jersey voters much to consider when choosing a new governor, their decision will influence if NJ will see recreational marijuana legalized anytime soon. The two candidates will both bring major change to the table for New Jersey.
Voting for Democrat Phil Murphy will lead to NJ joining the current eight states that have legalized recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older and adding to the projected multi-billion-dollar industry. Within the first 100 days of his term, Murphy has vowed to sign a legalization bill into law.
Murphy believes that legalizing marijuana will be seen as a solution to the social justice issue of greater arrest and conviction rates for blacks than whites. Murphy said during the debate, “That is the reason we want to legalize marijuana — not because we can make money off of it, that the last reason”.
Voting for Republican Kim Guadagno will keep preventing the recreational legalization. Although under Guadagno’s term you will see marijuana possession decriminalized, the offense will be punishable with a fine and improved access to a medical marijuana program.
“There is a less intrusive way to solve the social injustice problem than legalizing drug dealers,” Guadagno stated during the debate. “I am wholly opposed to legalizing marijuana. Having said that I, do believe we can decriminalize it.”
“I also would expand the medical marijuana program,” Guadagno added. “It’s onerous, it’s hard to work with, it’s not available to those who it should be made available to.”
Both candidates are bringing positive ideas of changing marijuana law forward, just in different ways. Murphy favoring full legalization for social injustice and Guadagno favoring its usage medical purposes. Will New Jersey jump on the bandwagon to reap the economic opportunities the industry is said to offer or will it move in another direction?
