We all know the big competitors in the presidential race this year: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Ted Cruz, and Donald Trump. We also know that cannabis is a huge issue that is a huge issue in this upcoming election. This begs the obvious question: how do these candidates feel about marijuana?
When it comes to cannabis, Hillary Clinton believes that states will be the ones who decide whether or not it will be legalized nationally. For the most part, she claims to advocate seeing how states do with it before deciding, but she does support changing cannabis to a class II drug from a class I drug through the Controlled Substances Act.
When one looks at Bernie Sanders’ position, Clinton’s seems to be rightist. Sanders says that the war on drugs has been evidently ruining this country because of how it has been impacting cannabis users, especially minorities, who are put in jail much more than other Americans.
“We have 2.2 million people in jail today, more than any other country. And we’re spending $80 billion a year to lock people up. We need major changes in our criminal justice system — including changes in drug laws,” Bernie Sanders said in October.
Out of these four, though, Ted Cruz may be the biggest opponent, having previously bashed Obama for supporting legalization. However, Cruz has lightened his position on cannabis; now he believes that although he does not support legalization, he believes that the federal government ought to “recognize that the citizens of those states have made that decision.”
In the past, Trump stated that legalizing cannabis should be considered because the war on drugs is not working. But while running his campaign, he said that he is against in. Later on, though, Like Cruz, changed his mind and said that recreational marijuana should be up to states. Trump does believe that medical cannabis should be legalized, however.
