The most massive outdoor grow operation has been uncovered Wednesday in Virginia located in a remote area of Bull Mountain. A total of-of over 30 thousand plants were discovered in 35 various grow locations roughly about 2 miles from the closest public road. The value of the all those plants on a street level is worth anywhere from $30 million to $105 million.
“There were crude trail systems cut throughout the mountainside, each one was hand cut by the suspects to avoid detection,” stated Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith. Smith stated that law officials from the sheriff’s office located the vast network of makeshift terraces at about 6 AM after doing some surveillance in the area.
It took more than 24 hours to eliminate all of the plants and move them down the mountain. “At some points, we had 25 officers from our agency, the Virginia State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) in the grow area at once counting and recovering plants,” Smith stated.
The sheriff stated based on evidence that was left at the scene by the suspects, they were able to identify that it was a Mexican grow operation, which have commonly been dissevered in remote locations throughout the US.
The plants that were discovered were small, ranging from eight inched to 2 feet in height. Smith stated that neither his investigators or state law officials who assisted have ever heard of a bigger outdoor operation being discovered in Virginia.
The investigation is still in effect and Smith is optimistic that charges are forthcoming.
“This is just another example of how we will work with other agencies to suppress crime in our community, I am proud of this office,” the sheriff stated.
