Lisa Valle is the mother of a sick child and was standing outside of Bloomfield Industries’ medical marijuana dispensary on Thursday. She decided to enter despite the fact that she likely wouldn’t be able to get any medication.

“It’s been a long road,” Lisa said.

Maya Valle, her daughter, has an extreme case of Epilepsy, resulting in multiple seizures. Both Lisa and various doctors believe that medical marijuana could help. Thursday was the first time the drug is legal in New York State after the Compassionate Care Act was passed in 2014. Unfortunately, Lisa does not have a card giving her access to medical marijuana.

“I don’t know what will happen when I go inside,” Lisa reported to 2 On Your Side.

She was in shock when a pharmacist working with the company spoke with her in the halls.

“They said they haven’t had one patient yet today, but they have medicine if a patient comes in,” Lisa said.

Bloomfield did not have any visitors because there are only fifty-one people in the state who are allowed to receive medical marijuana. The New York State Department of Health did not begin allowing patients to receive licenses until late December.

“It shouldn’t surprise us there are no patients,” Lisa stated.

Also, Lisa went to the PharmaCannis dispensary in Amherst, where she was able to speak to a pharmacist.

“You’ve gone through a lot, and we’re excited to be able to help patients,” Rachel Schepart, pharmacist, stated, highlighting that after a few weeks is when she believes it will become busy.

Laszlo Mechtler, a medical director at Dent Neurologic Institute in Amherst, along with seven coworkers, are already certified in the medical marijuana program, and another two are set to be joining them. He predicts that they will end up having between four and five hundred patients.
