Colorado’s U.S. senators, Cory Gardner and Michael Bennet, are supporting federal legislation to allow children who suffer from seizures and adults with intractable epilepsy to obtain medicinal cannabis.
The proposed Therapeutic Hemp Medical Access Act would rid federal prohibitions all throughout the nation on using cannabis that are beneficial to prevent certain seizures.
Gardner, who is a Republican, Bennet, a Democrat, stated the bill with Democratic Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden of Oregon and Republican Sens. Johnny Isakson of Georgia and Orrin Hatch of Utah at the Capitol in Washington last Wednesday
Because of federal prohibitions, certain families who are looking for help are forced to move to states like Colorado, where they can get the proper treatment through medical marijuana, the lawmakers argue.
“Colorado has become a haven for people in need and parents desperate to pursue treatment for their children,” Gardner stated. “Making this medicine available nationwide is the right thing to do and would help families cope with these serious illnesses.”
Bennet stated: “No parent wants to see their child suffer. At the very least, we should ease these restrictions to ensure that families have access to the medicine that their kids need.”
The act would pertain to strains such as Charlotte’s Web, which was cultivated for children and named for Charlotte Figi, a young Colorado child who suffers from a rare case of epilepsy caused her to stop verbally communicating prior to her symptoms subsiding while using the CBD treatment grown from the Charlotte’s Web strain.
