Using coffee and weed together has been a popular combination for quite some time, yet new research is showing that it may be even more beneficial than previously thought. Many people have sworn by this combination for years now, as it gives the ability to chill out nicely while also being productive. Many wonder about whether or not this combination has any adverse health effects, and the answer is quite surprising.

A new study has found a large connection between where the body processes marijuana and coffee respectively. According to the study “The ECS is a system of neurons and receptors in our bodies that plays a role in regulating many bodily functions, including pain, appetite, mood, sleep, and immune function. Our bodies produce natural versions of phytocannabinoids, like THC and CBD, called endocannabinoids. Anandamide is one endocannabinoid thought to be the body’s version of THC.” The study further states that “We also have endocannabinoid receptors, known as CB-1 and CB-2, all over the body, including in the brain, immune cells, GI tract, and even on the skin.”

The study looked at the metabolites in the blood of the subjects to see the amount of coffee that they drink. In the study, the participants drank anything from 0 to 8 cups of coffee per day. According to the study “a reduced amount of endocannabinoids in the blood when participants were drinking the most coffee, eight cups a day. In comparison, consuming cannabis products raises the level of endocannabinoids in a person’s system.”

A researcher in the field of cannabis, Dr. Ethan Russo, has stated that certain problems can come from a clinical endocannabinoid deficiency. These ailments can be anything from fibromyalgia to migraines and depression. The lead author of the study, Marilyn Cornelis, stated that “these are entirely new pathways by which coffee might affect health.” Using coffee and weed together has been a hot topic throughout weed news for quite some time. Those who use marijuana early in the day for a variety of reasons, usually do not have time to be too high throughout the day. Instead, these individuals have chosen to go the route of using coffee to help wake them up, while they are still properly medicated. Although this effect is usually not noticeable in most people, some people can get an increased amount of anxiety by doing this. If an individual has a heart condition, it can also be a bad idea.

The best way to counteract this is to first find a coffee that has a low caffeine content. This may be the easiest solution to having heart issues when consuming the two substances. When choosing a coffee, know that light roasts tend to have more caffeine than dark roasts. With weed, often times having a higher CBD content can help ease this, as CBD is a treatment for anxiety among other conditions. Either way, studies have shown that the combination of the two is still relatively safe for most individuals. This combination has helped those who need to be productive while also getting the proper medication they need throughout the past. The hopes are high that the combination will continue to be a breakthrough for those who need it, or that companies will be able to come out with the two combined in the near future. As legal marijuana has become more popular throughout the U.S., the combination of cannabis and coffee will remain extremely popular as well.
