This December a rural town somewhere between San Antonio and Houston will see an increase in travel. The small town of Schulenburg will be the destination of the first Texas marijuana dispensary. Schulenburg, Texas, whose population is around 3,000 is a remote town filled with German culture and is the home of the Texas Polka Music Museum.

Schulenburg will also become the home to the first marijuana dispensary in Texas this December. The dispensary, Knox Medical, obtained its state license over the summer. Knox Medical’s owner, Jose Hidalgo, also manages licensed medical marijuana businesses in states of Florida and Puerto Rico.

Hidalgo stated that the rural area was chosen strategically due to the location and the land for his grow operation. Both the dispensary and grow operation will be in this location.

Hidalgo plans to manufacture CBD-rich cannabis oil at the dispensary but it will not be the storefront. Knox Medical will deliver the orders of the CBD oil to registered patients throughout the state of Texas. By the end of the year, the dispensary’s sales and deliveries are scheduled to commence. Yet, it is possible that patients may not be able to place orders until the beginning of 2018 due to the slow licensing process.

Opinions vary on the idea of the dispensary amid residents of Schulenburg, according to Texas Public Radio. But, most are favor the idea of the boost in the town’s economy.

Local business owner Roy Smrkovsky, who is in favor of the dispensary, is optimistic that Texas will continue to provide greater access to medical marijuana as his wife suffers from chronic pain. Currently, Texas has not approved medical marijuana treatments for those who suffer from the condition.

“If it is for medicinal purposes, why suffer, why go through life and suffer,” Smrkovsky told Texas Public Radio.

Back in 2015, Texas legalized medical marijuana for a limited amount of conditions. The Texas Compassionate Use Act legalized growing, producing and selling of a specific type of cannabis oil. The Act only applies Now, two years later, the state has licensed its first dispensary.
