Las Vegas Strip officials decide to hold off on discussing licensing and regulating pot lounges until the city of Denver endorses the United States’ first pot club. July 1, Nevada launched legal sales of recreational marijuana for adults 21 years and older. Demand from tourists is high, but the law only allows usage in in private homes leaving tourists without a place to legally use.

The initial discussion among commissioners concluded that there is nothing in state law that prohibits local governments from permitting these lounges. At first, the commissioners stated they wanted the district attorney’s opinion then later established they preferred to hold off.

During late August the city of Denver began allowing businesses to submit applications to open marijuana clubs. There are no applicants on file as of yet, but Denver anticipated a slow start since the application is extensive. It requires businesses have support from community groups. Multiple companies still are investigating the idea and seeking the required endorsement from the community.
Gov. Brian Sandoval, once against the idea accepted the desire and endorsed an earlier sale program beginning in July instead of August expediting the collection of revenue from state marijuana taxes. Sandoval is apprehensive that legalization of pot lounges can increase federal scrutiny of Nevada’s marijuana sales.

Andrew Jolley, president of the Nevada Dispensary Association, said that a county advisory panel anticipates presenting a pilot project for a few lounges to help better understand correct operations of these facilities.

“What I heard from the commission today is that they are open to the idea in concept, but they are not ready to move forward today,” Jolley said. “My reading of the situation is that they are looking for more concrete and specific ideas to discuss and to debate when formulating their decision.”
