“The process today is too complicated, we are using outdated methods,” Senator Tick Segerblom, D-Nevada, said. “We have done better with incorporating dispensaries but failed to update the card process.”
Segerblom has been one of the main supporters of the medical marijuana program in Nevada. The senator wrote the law that let medical cannabis dispensaries work in Nevada. However, Segerblom states that there needs to be a new way to obtain the medical cannabis cards.
“When the process was made in the early 2000’s, medicinal marijuana wasn’t as nearly as recognized as it is today,” Segerblom added. “Attitudes have changed since then at it is becoming more known as a safe and effective medication.”
People living in Las Vegas can have sex or alcohol at any time, but must wait a long period of time and fill out a lot of paperwork to get medical marijuana. This wait is too long for people with debilitating diseases. The path to getting a medical card starts with a $25 request from the Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH). The form must have written approval from a licensed doctor in order to ensure that the patient actually needs marijuana.
Once the form is sent back, given that the DPBH approves of the form, the state will perform a background check. If anything on your criminal record indicates that you sold an illegal drug, you will not be able to obtain medical marijuana. You must then pay a total of $95 in order to fingerprint and for a card application. Within a month, the Division of Health will decide whether or not you will receive marijuana.
Finally, if you are approved, you will need to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles. There will be a very long wait in line and then for $13.25; you can finally obtain your card. The fact that it costs hundreds of dollars and that it takes so long indicates that it is surely time for a change.
