Publix is the most popular supermarket chain in all of Florida. It has been listed as the most valuable and the most loved company in the entire state thanks to its service as well as its famous sub sandwiches. Well, that may be a reason why it was very difficult for some Publix-lovers to learn that the family that founded the company just put $800,000 towards stopping the legalization of medical marijuana.

State elections have indicated that the Carol Jenkins Barnett Family Trust put $800,000 towards Drug-Free Florida just a week ago. Drug-Free Florida is the group desperate to stop medical marijuana amendments from passing. That same group helped get rid of the medical marijuana amendment in 2014, which was just two percentage points away from the vote it needed to become law. There is a similar measure on the ballot in November under the name “Amendment 2.” Drug-Free Florida has decided to fight once more and has been spreading misconceptions about medical marijuana.’

Forbes has suggested that Jenkins Barnett, the daughter of Publix’s founder, George Jenkins, is worth $1.8 billion and also owns less than give a percent of the supermarket chain. In addition to that, she is the company’s largest shareholder as of last month. She truly does not like medical marijuana, though, it seems. In the past, she gave more than $500,000 to Drug-Free Florida. Now, she is giving even more. However, when Publix was reached out to, they made sure to disconnect themselves from her decision. Publix spokesperson Maria Brous spoke out on the issue.

“Publix has not made a contribution in support of or in opposition to Amendment 2,” she said when interviewed. “The donation made by Carol Jenkins Barnett was a personal donation and not one made by the company.”
