DC Police Return Seized Marijuana to Residents
Law enforcement officials routinely seize illegal substances, but most wouldn’t think of returning them. Yet, that’s all turning around in the District of Columbia.
A Special Order was distributed to the law enforcement of the DC area last week, specifying that residents are legally allowed to request any seized cannabis to see its way back to it original owner.
“A person whose marijuana or marijuana-infused edible goods was seized… may seek the return of their property by visiting the station in the District where the marijuana was seized no sooner than 24 hours after the seizure,” the order outlined.
Recreational cannabis legalization took effect last week in Washington DC, but law enforcement can still confiscate marijuana if the resident does not show proof of age or is arrested for a different offense. In return, individuals with in their legal right can ask for their pot it back.
Released on the air waves of WAMU 88.5, one resident in our nations capital took advantage of this new policy on Monday.
Witnesses stated he walked into the Sixth District police station in Ward 7 and said the police officer on duty at that time, that he wanted his property back – point and case, his pot. After some slight confusion initially, the officer eventually gave it back.
Its simple to laugh at the fact that it’s not every day police hand out pot, but that possibly could become the case in our nations capital
