Need continues to build across the U.S. cannabis industry for all-natural pesticide alternatives such as those being marketed by Neutra Corp. (NTRR). This week, Washington State faced its very first cannabis product recall due to concerns over illegal pesticide usage.
A Washington-based cannabis wholesaler issued the voluntary recall after two cannabis producers used by the wholesaler were recently investigated by the state’s Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB) for the use of prohibited pesticides. The three products facing recalls are all high-CBD edibles, which constitute a popular and growing segment of the U.S. cannabis industry. While Colorado’s cannabis market has weathered several product recalls in recent years, this was the first in Washington State, where voters legalized cannabis for adult use in 2012.
Health concerns have increasingly threatened to derail profits in the U.S. cannabis industry, creating a new market opportunity for companies such as NTRR. Many pest-control products used in agriculture have not been approved for products intended to be consumed or smoked, and public fears about these harsh chemicals have led to increasing scrutiny and regulation. NTRR is working to help the industry sidestep the problem by offering up alternatives.
NTRR is marketing new, potentially healthier alternatives to harsh chemicals in cannabis cultivation. Alongside joint venture partner Surface to Air Solutions (S2O2), the company offers cannabis growers and other businesses a suite of horticultural products—including a plant stimulant, an air-scrubber and a self-cleaning hard surface treatment. Used together, the suite of products helps allow healthy plants to thrive without the use of pesticides and fungicides. Some are already in use by growers in the United States and Canada.
