As per the usual twitter announcements, President Trump recently stated that Mick Mulvaney will become the new acting White House Chief of Staff. While at first, this may not seem like such a big deal, the announcement has massive implications for the world of cannabis and the future of the substance in the U.S.

Mulvaney is no stranger to U.S. politics as he currently is in office as the director of the Office of Management and Budget as well as the acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Mulvaney has also served a myriad of other positions which can help to characterize his stature in the government.

One of the aspects that has stayed true to Mulvaney has been his support of marijuana reform on quite a consistent basis. Back in 2015, Mulvaney voted that he supported an amendment that would stop interfering from the Justice Department on individual state marijuana law. The bill would allow for more protections for statewide medicinal cannabis programs as well as helping to shift laws that deal with recreational cannabis. Although it didn’t pass due to being just nine votes short, it would have been a major deal for the world of marijuana.

To continue on this historic route, Mulvaney consistency has voted to allow new amendments to the Department of Veterans Affairs that would allow doctors to begin recommending the use of marijuana to military veterans. While this may not seem like a big deal, amendments like this have been far and few in between and have not seen a large amount of support from the Trump run government.

In 2014, Mulvaney also backed an amendment that would effectively prevent the U.S. Treasury Department from punishing banks that chose to work with marijuana businesses. This has been a very large issue in the nation as many companies working in the cannabis space have been unable to have access to standard banking laws that they need to operate. This means no access to loans, no access to lines of credit and no ability to take payments outside of cash.

In addition to this, the congressman also voted yes on an amendment that would allow medicinal laws for the use of cannabidiol or CBD as well as various protections for industrial hemp which has become a major business in the country.

Don Murphy, the director of federal policies for the Marijuana Policy Project stated that “Mulvaney’s history of opposing wasteful government spending and support for states’ rights, specifically when it comes to marijuana, makes him our strongest ally in the White House.”

All of this information regarding the new official means that the world of cannabis may get a solid boost in the near future. While a large amount of the government has shown support for cannabis reform, the industry needs more help than ever to ensure its future is stable in the country. Hopefully, the next few years will help to solve many of the issues that we are facing in this country with marijuana legislation.
