In spite of an endeavor by Maryland Senator Larry Hogan to keep bringing the criminal mallet down on those got possessing cannabis, those found with pipes, bongs, and other smoking devices no more need to stress over being sent to prison. On Thursday, the Maryland Council, commanded by Democratic forces, outweighed some of the representative’s vetoes, including a bill that would have permitted the ownership of drug devices to remain a criminal offense. Both the House and Senate secured a monstrous override to Hogan’s dismissal of 2015’s proposition planned to reinforce the extent of the state’s decriminalization laws.
In spite of the fact that Maryland moved to decriminalize the ownership of weed in 2014, the bill did not come connected with a procurement that permitted devices to be dealt with in the same way. Representative Bobby Zirkin endeavored to settle this oversight a year ago with the presentation of Senate Bill 517—a proposition planned to convey some equalization to the decriminalization law by uprooting the criminal punishments for the ownership of anything related to the utilization of marijuana.
While the bill was invited with open arms in both the Senate and House of Representatives, things got ugly once it arrived in the work area of Senator Hogan. The bill was eventually dismissed, for the most part because the governor said he was worried that “state and local law enforcement would be left with no authority to make a traffic stop if they see someone smoking marijuana while driving.”
During the hearing this week, opposing lawmakers didn’t just repeated Hogan’s worries. However, they also added that a veto override would result in a wild scene of citizens getting high in public. Representative Herb McMillan called alcoholics “Bubba” and smokers “Spicoli” in a metaphor to get his point across. He said that going against the veto would have those found drinking in public in jail while “Spicoli can take the piece of paper he was given by the police officer, make a doobie out of it and smoke it.”
