Most United States citizens will agree on one thing: the presidential nominees of the election will probably be Hillary Clinton for the Democratic side as well as Donald Trump from the Republican side. The Democratic and Republican majority have very different opinions. For instance, they differ when it comes to gun control, immigration and taxes. However, there is one thing that they agree on: medical marijuana.
Almost ninety percent of citizens in the United States, eighty-one percent of which are Republicans and ninety-four of which are Democrats, support legalizing medical marijuana, according to a poll published by Quinnipiac University on Monday, where 1,500 were asked whether or not they supported legalization. In comparison, only fifty-five percent of United States citizens think that gun laws should be more restrictive. As for immigration, thirty-four percent believe it should be decreased while fifty-seven percent think taxes are too high, according to new polls by Gallup.
Regardless of how many people in the nation support it, the legalization of medical marijuana does not come up very much in the general election since presidential candidates have more control, according to Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the nonprofit organization National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has won enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination. As for her position on marijuana, she has continuously stated that states that have legalized have been tests for the rest of the country, but there must be more studies done before anything national occurs.
Donald Trump, the likely presidential nominee of the Republican party, has not explicitly clarified his position on medical marijuana. However, in an interview back in February, Trump said he supported medical marijuana. As overall legalization is concerned, he says that “in some ways it’s good, and in other ways, it’s bad.”
