Everyday more people are joining the movement of legalizing marijuana throughout the nation. Now union groups are in favor of partaking in this movement. This past Wednesday the three biggest Ohio branches of the union, which represent more than 60,000 retail employees, have backed the ResponsibleOhio initiative to legalize cannabis.
“The executive board of these locals, which are made up of rank-and-file members, made a decision to support this proposal because we want to make sure that we have good jobs in the new legal marijuana industry,” stated Laurie Couch.
Couch also stated, majority of the local Union members are employed by retail businesses, as well as Kroger, Meijer and CVS, and in food packing and processing. Union groups locals 75, 880 and 1059 issued endorsement.
Next, According to Laurie Couch, while it is still to soon to act on the proposed industry on wages, “We’re committed to working to make sure they do pay a living wage, good benefits and that people have the hours that they need.”
Another crucial factor for the UFCW, Couch quoted “The communities where our members live and work really need better public services.” The endorsement will continue after Monday’s nod from the president of Cincinnati State and Community College Dr. O’Dell Owens.
