Italy might be one of the next countries to begin distributing cannabis legally. For the first time ever, the Italian Parliament is going to meet and speak about a measure that would legalize marijuana very similarly to how the United States legalized the drug in Colorado. It would be taxed and regulated the same way that alcohol is.
However, Italy has never truly been thought of as a country passionate about drug reform. The new bill, though, was proposed by Cannabis Legale, an inter-parliamentary organization who believed that the “anti-prohibitionist option on marijuana is no longer just an idea, but…a concrete government strategy.” This could indeed lead the nation into a leader that will guide inspire other countries to take measures to legalize marijuana.
The measure, which is going to be discussed on Monday, is going to give citizens the ability to have up to fifteen grams of marijuana at their house, and up to five grams in public. In addition, it would make it legal for some people to grow marijuana at home, but there is a limit. Those people would only be able to grow five plants for their own use. A report from a local newspaper shows that cultivators will then be able to set up pot bars for social use, with the wording of the measure allowing for marijuana to be transferred in the space, but not for profit.
But if the bill were to become law, the drug would become a big part of Italy’s taxed and regulated commerce. Similar to the U.S., the Italian parliament would give out licenses that allows cannabis to be grown and sold in retail outlets recreationally, with all purchases taxed a five percent, which would then go into Italy’s war on drugs funding, very much so ironically.
