Prior investigative studies has implicated that CBD in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, yet due to the irreversible condition of the disease’s progression, real breakthroughs are difficult to create. For the first time ever, researchers in Australis looked at what long-term oral CBD administration does and discovered that it helps social recognition in rodents with Alzheimer’s.

One of the most dramatic and disturbing conditions of Alzheimer’s disease is the loss of social recognition; a lot of patients fail to understand even their own children. Seemingly irreversible alterations happen in the brain when a person gets Alzheimer’s creating a treatment of the disease an obstacle to hurdle.

CBD in the past has been known to offer some assistance as a neutral antioxidant in preclinical testing on mice, yet without real improvements in their mental state. By using special transgenic mice breed to succumb to the disease, researchers were able to analyze the symptoms of what preventative CBD treatment does, and the results were impressive. Mice that took 20 mg of CBD every day prior to showing signs of Alzheimer’s did not develop social recognition deficits, even in the midst of a full-fledged Alzheimer’s disease. While some other signs were still remained present, the mice typically had cognition if they used CDB for a long period of time. Researchers think that “this prevention may be linked to CBD induced retention to dietary phytosterols or neuroinflammatory processes in the brain” of mice with Alzheimer’s.

With progress happening every day in genomic research, so called “personalized medicine” will allow physicians to preventatively treat diseases prior to them happening. Mutations on particular chromosomes can whether or not a person is at risk for developing Alzheimer’s CBD may someday be used to help these people to have a better life.
