A poll from Quinnipiac University has shown that legalization in Florida has had more and more growing support. The poll shows that voters in Florida support legal marijuana by a margin of 51 to 45 percent.
“If men are from Mars and women are from Venus, then the Red Planet might be the more spacey place. That’s because men are more likely than women to support legalization of marijuana for recreational use,” said the assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, Peter A. Brown. “Not surprisingly support for the change is linked to age, with younger voters more likely to see a personal use of pot as a good thing.”
As Brown said, the poll shows that men support legalization 57 to 41 percent while women oppose legalizing marijuana 49 to 46 percent. The poll also shows that the most support is from Millennial voters. People from the ages 18 to 34 years old support legalizing pot with an astounding margin of 66 to 30 percent. In comparison, 35 to 49-year-olds drop to 52 to 44 percent. It is still interesting to note that Baby Boomers have considered marijuana less dangerous than they did in the past. In the past, 55% that were born between 1951 and 1965 supported legalization and it has now raised to 56%. Although many people vote for legalization in Florida, 67% of people say that they would not smoke pot if it were legalized.
The law was voted on in Florida in the past, but the Florida Right to Medical Marijuana Initiative did not pass as a state constitutional amendment. 3.3 million Floridians voted to legalize medical marijuana, but that was only 57.6% compared to the 60% needed to make it a law.
“The strong support among Floridians for legalizing medical marijuana may not be enough,” Brown warns. “In 2014, voters expressed overwhelming support for legalization, but at the ballot box they failed to meet the 60 percent threshold required by the State Constitution.”
